Pricing
Affordable MTD offers a simple, transparent pricing model:
- Free for the 2026-27 tax year — the first year of MTD is completely free. No credit card required, no hidden catches.
- £19.99/year from the 2027-28 tax year onwards — a single annual payment that covers unlimited quarterly submissions, annual adjustments, and the final declaration for one tax year.
There are no monthly fees, no per-submission charges, and no premium tiers. Every user gets access to every feature.
For comparison: Full accounting packages with MTD typically charge £12–£25 per month (£144–£300 per year), and other bridging tools around £20–£40 a year. Affordable MTD costs less than two months of the most affordable alternative. See our full price comparison for details.
How to subscribe
During the free period (2026-27 tax year), no payment is needed. When the paid plan becomes active, you'll be prompted to subscribe from within Affordable MTD. Payment is handled securely through Stripe — Affordable MTD never stores your card details.
Managing your subscription
You can manage your subscription from Settings in your Affordable MTD dashboard:
- View your current plan — see whether you're on the free tier or a paid subscription, and when it renews
- Update payment method — change the card used for future payments
- Download invoices — access past invoices for your records or expense claims
- Cancel your subscription — cancel at any time; you'll retain access until the end of your current billing period
- Reactivate — if you cancel and change your mind, you can reactivate before the billing period ends
Clicking "Manage Subscription" takes you to a secure billing portal (powered by Stripe) where you can make these changes.
What happens if I cancel?
If you cancel your subscription:
- You keep access to all features until the end of your current billing period
- Your data (submissions, businesses, history) is preserved — nothing is deleted
- You can reactivate at any time to regain full access
- You can export your data at any point, even after cancelling
MTD is mandatory. If you cancel and don't switch to another MTD-compatible tool, you won't be able to submit the required quarterly updates to HMRC. Make sure you have an alternative in place before your next quarterly deadline.
Exporting your data
You can export all your submission data at any time from Settings. This downloads a file containing your complete history — every quarterly update, annual adjustment, and declaration you've submitted.
This is useful for your own records, sharing with your accountant, or migrating to a different tool if needed.
Deleting your account
If you want to permanently delete your account and all associated data, you can do so from Settings → Delete Account. This action is irreversible. Your login, your HMRC connection (including your HMRC tokens and National Insurance number) are deleted straight away, and your name and business names are removed. A record of the submissions you made to HMRC through Affordable MTD is kept for up to 7 years, no longer linked to your email address or login - see our privacy policy for details. To remove Affordable MTD's access on HMRC's side as well, you can also revoke it in your HMRC online account.
Note that deleting your Affordable MTD account does not affect your HMRC records. Any submissions already sent to HMRC remain on their systems.
Common questions
Is there a monthly payment option?
No — at £19.99/year, a monthly option wouldn't make practical sense. The annual payment keeps things simple and keeps costs low.
Do I get a receipt for my subscription?
Yes. Stripe automatically sends email receipts for payments. You can also download invoices from the billing portal.
Can I claim Affordable MTD as a business expense?
Yes. Software used for tax compliance is an allowable business expense. You can include the cost in your "admin costs" or "professional fees" expense category.
